How Capt. John fished it

  • 10" + 2-fly on divers: Dipsy on setting 1.5–2.5 with a big ring, 100–250' out. Port (left-turning) flasher on the port diver, starboard (right-turning) on the starboard diver, so the spin works with each side and lines don't tangle.
  • 12" + 3-fly on the deepest rigger: 10–20' lead, 80–120' down, July–September. His "John J Special" was a 12" King Kryptonite with a 3-fly Undertaker.
  • Speed: 1.2–2.0 mph for deep summer Kings.
  • Colors: white and chrome early in the season; glow from the 2nd–3rd week of July.
