Capt. John's switch: once his Rip Teezers™ artificial herring strips went on sale in 2021, John stopped buying meat strips. Rip Teezers™ (Regular, Glow and XG Extended Glow) fit both Magnum and Super Magnum meat heads with zero tuning, need no brine or thawing, and last for seasons. See Rip Teezers Use and Care.

How Capt. John fished it

  • Big fish, small bait: every 30 lb+ King of John's charter career hit a 4–5" bait.
  • Rigging Rip Teezers™ (Magnum or Super Magnum): push the strip all the way into the head and let the hook hang freely near the end. No tuning. 2.2 mph is the sweet spot.
  • Rigging whole bait (Super Magnum): snip the head, trim fat bait, slide it in, toothpick through, first treble in the tail. Ready in under 30 seconds.
  • Roll, don't twirl: give whole bait a slight bend at 2.2 mph and slower.
  • Brine (real bait): a handful of Borax and a handful of kosher salt in a large jar of water. Keep cold and reuse.
  • Best depth for meat: 38–44°F water, usually on the deepest rigger.
